Adopting two children at the same time !
There is a question that Pierre and I get VERY often and it is " why did you decide to adopt two children at the same time". This is a really hard question for us as we NEVER DECIDED THIS... in our hearts we just knew that there were two children that were meant to be ours and that they were in Ethiopia ! We never had the discussion of one or two, when we found out that it was possible to adopt two children from Ethiopia at the same time, we knew we had two children that would make their way to us !
When the social worker discussed with us how much harder it would be on us to adopt two instead of just one at a time with the adjustement and all that, Pierre told her "We know it will be hard, however we will never know what it would have been like to have one child and we are doing this for them, in order for them to have each other" I thought that was so true, Pierre and I always seem to have the exact same thoughts when it comes to our children. And having the special bond of being sisters we think is great for our girls !
We think that it will be nice for Marika and Karelle as they grow older to share the same adoption story and have the same birth family to remember and talk about! We also think that initialy, it will be nice for them to have each other as this is the only thing that will be familiar to them. Sleeping in the same room and seeing the other there as well we hope will help sooth them some nights when everything might just not seem right in the beginning.
Since we didn't have any other children, we also thought that it would be fun for them to have a playmate right away since they are used to being with SOOO many children in the foster home !
Eventually, they will also have each other at school and being only one grade apart we think will be fun for them !
We are not being naive however we know that adopting two at the same time means more time, more laundry, more dr and dentist apt, more food, more diapers, more milk, more cries and less sleep however we know that we will also have double the kisses, double the laughs, double the 'I love you's" and double the hugs and we plan to enjoy every minute of the time we will have with the girls ! A friend of mine just wrote a wonderful post "Be in the moment" (take a moment to read this, it is worth it) and well this is exactly what we hope to do from the day the girls are placed in our arms in a few months !
We are very happy to have decided to adopt two and we know that this was what was best for our family !

thanks so much for posting about this. my husband and i have just started on the ethiopian adoption journey (homestudy June 30th) and i am contemplating 2 children at once (husband is even less sure). i am very nervous about 2 at once...but at the same time am feeling more and more like it's what we should do. i love how you say you're doing it for them and not you--that really hit home. ANYWAY. :) Great blog, I have it bookmarked.

I would have loved to have been able to adopt two at the same time for all the same reasons you mentioned in your post. It will be great for the girls and it will surely help in their transition. I mean, I'm not social worker or expert, but with all the challenges these kids face when we adopt them, they will always know they have each other and together they will learn to love Mom and Dad.
We watch a show called Jon and Kate plus 8 - 8 kids - Man that looks like a lot of work, but when the going is good that house must be a blast. Oh yeah - it's 2 six year olds and 6 two year olds. I'd take 8 kisses and hugs every morning!!
Take care!!

I also wish we could of adopted 2. We are seriously looking at going back. A sibling closer in age to Lily would be great.
It's easier to have 2 or 3 than just 1.
They always have a playmate.

Yes, adopting 2 at once is way more busy, way more work...BUT you are right when you say double the kisses, double the hugs etc. I was watching my little ones yesterday just playing together in the yard and I am so so thrilled that we adopted two at the same time. My older kids adore them equally.
They have each other, they look the same, they have the same heritage, the same story and birth family. They have never been apart and even though they are so young, it is a comfort to them when the other is there. Moses sobs if he is in bed before Ayana. Ayana mournfully cries if she wakes up and Moses got up before her. She will immediately say "where Doy Doy mama?" (his Ethiopian nickname)
The first thing they do each morning is "chatter" to each other and throw toys into each other's cribs.
I can not even imagine life without the two of them being here...
And yes, we are doing this for them, it's not about how much work it will be for us...so true.
Lisa, you and Pierre are both going to have your arms full...and it will be incredible.

Lisa, I also considered adopting two siblings and secretly wish I had the means to do that! Your girls will have each other and four loving arms to cuddle up in, two cheeks to kiss - I can imagine the fun and chatter! You and Pierre sound so ready for your girls! The work will be there, and it will come back to you in so many wonderful ways! Thanks for your post!

Heya Lisa;
We've started the homestudy, and our SW is defiantely giving us the gears about wanting 2 kids... in the nicest way. But you can tell she thinks it's nute.
We just think that it will be so good for the kids, to have each other, and always have someone who has the same nose (or whatever.) And there are siblings as well as singles who need homes.
I think as a first-time parent (we are too) you get double the trouble from the SW - your parenting skills haven't been proven yet. But I know how well we work together as a team ,and I know the challenges wil be worth it a million times over. Like you said, how can you argue with "double the kisees and hugs"?
Cheers
Nicky
