Personal Thoughts on the Special about Africa
I am really grateful that these types of programs are being done as it promotes awareness and helps others learn about the current AIDS crisis in Africa.
The statistics really dig at my heart all the time... and I am always thinking that our babies will probably be orphans because of this AIDS crisis... we may not find this out about them.... but the chance is big that their family has been affected by this AIDS crisis...... so many people (including children) are dying when this disease is preventable....
There is currently 4 millions orphans because of this aids crisis... 18 millions expected before 2010..... almost unbelievable....
They were saying how as most countries in Africa are too poor to feed their family that they don't have access to even having the HIV tests done so most people don't even know that they have it until they get sick.... In the US and Canada, when a mother is HIV positive, there is only 1% chance that the baby will contract it during labour (because of a certain medicine) however in Africa they can't afford these medication either.... and once someone gets the disease, they can't afford the medicine to keep them from dying.. so its just gets worse and worse.... Another statistic was that from all the people that have HIV or AIDS in Africa.. only %5 of them have access to the medication usually from practises opened by doctors from the US and Canada that offer free medical care....
It almost seems surreal that we live in the same world....
I know most think that there is nothing we can do. But there is...
1) Bringing awareness to others is number one
2) Sponsoring children from Africa (there are many organizations that offer these programs)
3) Raising money and having it sent to organizations that help Africans that have HIV/AIDS
4) Volunteering your help by going on an expedition to Africa ( many organizations also offer this program
5) The last thing I find that is important is to appreciate the life that we are able to live here in a developed world and to never take ANYTHING for granted.
